EK Chain Installation - Guide to Master Links

When you purchase a brand new motorcycle chain, the length of chain contains 1 single "master link" and 100+ standard links. After you cut the chain to the proper length with a chain cutting too and loop it around your sprockets, the master link is used to connect one end of the chain to the other. There are a number of master link styles available that require different tools for install, some you can clip with a simple wrench and others that require a specific tool.
Rivet-Type Master Link (MLJ) (requires a Rivet Tool)
A Rivet-style master link is arguably the strongest possible master link style and is designed much like the other standard links on the chain. It requires a special chain riveting tool to crimp the master link and is a permanent fastener. You will need to cut the chain with a special chain cutting tool for uninstallation.
Semi-Press Fit Clip-Type Master Link (SKJ) (only requires pliers)
The Semi-Press fit Clip-type master link is designed to "clip" onto the standard link with only a set of pliers needed. This semi-press fit design requires a little more pressure than the Slip Fit design but offers a tighter fit and better dependability.
Screw Type Master Link (SLJ) (only requires wrench & pilers)
The Screw type master link is available as an option for some sealed chains and was developed for racers who needed a quick and secure way of installing chains without needing a chain riveting tool. This screw type master link uses screws to secure the connection between the master and standard links and only require a wrench & pilers for installation.
